Butcher rejects struggling Barnsley

Barnsley will have to look elsewhere for a new manager after the former England captain Terry Butcher opted to stay at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The 54-year-old had been in talks with the Tykes since Monday but has decided to reject the Championship side's overtures.

Sean O'Driscoll also turned down the opportunity to move to Oakwell earlier in the month after Barnsley dispensed with Keith Hill's services at the end of December.

Butcher explained: "It was a very tough decision because Barnsley made me feel so welcome. They're extremely passionate for the club but we've started something at Inverness.

"This is the best season of my managerial career - but it's only halfway through and I want to finish the season off in style and continue the good work we've started."

Butcher took over at Inverness in January 2009 and has guided the club to second in the Scottish Premier League and into the semi-finals of the League Cup.

He previously managed Coventry City, Sunderland, Motherwell and Brentford after enjoying an illustrious playing career that was primarily spent with Ipswich Town and Rangers.

Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron admitted he was thrilled with Butcher's decision, saying: "When Barnsley made their approach we felt that out of courtesy we should allow Terry the opportunity to meet with them. But it is a huge relief that he has opted to stay."

Barnsley are currently at the bottom of the Championship table and are 1/4 to be relegated this season.

They face Leeds United this weekend and are 2/1 to win the Yorkshire derby, while Neil Warnock's side can be backed at 13/10 to come out on top.
