Ferguson eyes belated Xmas gift

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes playing their post-Christmas matches at home will leave them in a good position heading into 2013.

The Premier League leaders start their packed festival schedule with a trip to Swansea on Sunday before games against Newcastle United and West Brom at Old Trafford after Christmas Day.

The Magpies head to the Theatre of Dreams on Boxing Day having not won in Manchester since 1972 and with Ferguson's men having rolled them over comfortably 3-0 earlier in the season.

The Baggies then face United having not lost to Albion since 1984 and as such will be confident of taking maximum points from the last two matches of 2012.

United are currently six points ahead of rivals Manchester City and are priced at 1/2 to win the Premier League, while the Citizens are 2/1.

With City facing tricky trips to Sunderland and Norwich in their post-Christmas schedule Ferguson is hoping home advantage could make the difference as the season enters the second half.

"For years they used to send us up to Middlesbrough or Sunderland around Boxing Day or New Year," Ferguson said in Inside United. "But this time they're giving us a bit of clemency, forgiving us for our previous sins!

"Whether at home or away you've still got to win the games.

"But we usually get ourselves to the New Year in a good position and that's where we want to be."

Before United can focus on their two homes matches they must first navigate a testing trip to south Wales to face Swansea City.

The Swans have lost their last two but before that were unbeaten in their last six.

Swansea are 4/1 to beat the Red Devils on Sunday, with Ferguson's men 4/1 and the draw 3/1.
