Lambert demands Villa response

Paul Lambert promised a "different game" when Aston Villa host Bradford City in the return leg of the Capital One Cup semi-finals.

The Midlands club crashed to a 3-1 first-leg defeat at Valley Parade on Tuesday and face the genuine threat of missing out on a possible Wembley appearance at the hands of League Two opposition.

Lambert was critical of his side's defending from set-pieces on a difficult night in West Yorkshire, as goals from Nahki Wells, Rory McArdle and Carl McHugh gave Phil Parkinson's men the advantage, but refused to throw the towel in. Villa can now be backed at 1/3 in the 90 minutes betting, with the draw quoted 4/1 and away win 8/1.

The Scot said his players would do their utmost to prevent the Bantams from becoming the first team from the fourth tier of English football to reach the final of the League Cup since Rochdale in 1962.

"At any level of football, you can't defend set-plays like that and expect to win games of football," Lambert said.

"But we're still in the tie, absolutely. It will be a different game at Villa Park. We had lots of chances to score and we never took them, but it's only half-time."

He added: "It will be a totally different game at Villa Park, but when chances come our way we have to take them."

Villa, priced 4/9 in the 'not to be relegated' market, return to Premier League action on Saturday when they take on Southampton in a crucial between two clubs struggling at the wrong end of the table.
