Andy Murray is aiming to win his first Australian Open and second Grand Slam title after being handed a first round draw against the Dutchman Robin Haase.
Murray has played the world number 54 on two previous occasions, losing once but beating Haase in five sets at the 2011 US Open.
Murray could face Juan Martin del Potro in the last eight and Roger Federer in the semi-finals but is not in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic.
The Scot was beaten by Djokovic in the Melbourne final 12 months and also reached the final in 2010 when he was outclassed by Federer.
Murray, 5/2 to win this year's Australian Open, said: "I always love coming out to Australia, it's a great Slam and all the players love it. There's a laid-back atmosphere here and it definitely beats the weather back home this time of year.
"Having said that, it can hit 40 degrees during the day, so fitness and recovery definitely play a big part. I've performed consistently here and have been in two Grand Slam finals here in the last few years, but I'm aiming to go one better this year."
Djokovic, 1/1 to retain his title, plays Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in round one, and is seeded to face David Ferrer in the semi-finals.
In the women's draw, British number one Heather Watson will play the Romanian Alexandra Cadantu and Laura Robson will take on Melanie Oudin.
Robson will play the 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova or former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the second round, if she can beat Oudin.
Reigning champion and world number one Victoria Azarenka, 10/3 to retain her title, plays Romanian Monica Nicolescu in round one, while five-time champion Serena Williams (5/6) meets Edina Gallovits-Hall.
