Neville a candidate for Toffees job

Veteran midfielder Phil Neville has emerged as a shock contender to follow in the footsteps of David Moyes and become the new manager of Everton.

Moyes is set to be confirmed as the new boss of Manchester United, but the Scot, who will be replacing boss Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford after 26 years, is determined to leave the Toffees in good shape.

Moyes met with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright in a London hotel on Wednesday afternoon and one of the main topics of conversation was a potential Goodison succession plan.

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is seen as a fancied option amongst the early runners and riders.

However, sources at the club's Finch Farm training facility are stating Neville, 36, has received a personal recommendation from Moyes to step into the void.

Neville is highly-regarded by Moyes, who has provided him with access to some of his workings over the last 12 months.

He would also be keen to take Neville to United, but Kenwright has now made himself open to the possibility of handing a complete novice the reins at Goodison Park.

Neville is 15.00 to be named as the next permanent manager at Everton, with Martinez 1.80 and Roberto Di Matteo 26.00.
