Terry 'fine' after successful return

Chelsea captain John Terry came through an Under-21 game unscathed on Thursday but is unsure when he will be able to return to first-team action.

The 32-year-old England international has missed 16 first-team games since suffering knee ligament damage against Liverpool two months ago but was able to play for 45 minutes against Fulham's Under-21s at the club's Cobham training ground.

After the Liverpool game, it was thought that Terry would only be sidelined for three weeks but the problem has proved to be far more serious than was initially predicted.

Chelsea have won only four Premier League matches during Terry's absence and they are now 14/1 to win the title and 1/6 to finish in the top four.

They are also 9/2 to retain the FA Cup and 11/4 to win the Capital One Cup, even though they trail 2-0 to Swansea City after the first leg of their semi-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

After being replaced at half-time following a goalless first half against Fulham, Terry said: "I have come through alright. Initially I was going to play between 30 and 45 minutes so I managed to get through the first half and the knee feels totally fine which is the main thing.

"I felt fine, totally fine. Passing, tackling, everything felt fine. It's really positive to come through a game and hopefully give myself a chance to be back involved with the first team.

"Maybe it is too soon to get back starting. The lads have been playing well as well, so I know better than anybody I have to wait my time and be patient and try to get back in the squad first, then the team after that."
