Cook puts England in charge

England are in complete control of the third Test against India thanks again to captain Alastair Cook as he made history on day two with his 23rd century.

The 27-year-old has been in sensational form with the bat for the tourists since the start of the tour and made centuries in the two previous matches.

His latest knock in Kolkata was made extra special though as it was his 23rd for England, taking him to the top of the list of all-time centurions for the nation.

Cook, along with fellow opener Nick Compton, gave the visitors a solid platform to build on after the bowlers had finished off the Indian tail, Monty Panesar taking two more wickets to take his tally to four as the hosts were dismissed for 316.

In response Cook and Compton put on a stand worth 165 to get England off to a flyer, although there was a lucky escape for the skipper early on as he was dropped on 17 by Cheteshwar Pujara.

India were made to pay for their sloppy fielding by the England openers before Compton went for 57 after missing an attempted sweep of Pragyan Ojha.

Jonathan Trott came in and showed signs of his old self after two successive ducks, easing to 21 not out as England ended the day 216-1, 100 runs behind their opponents.

Should England win at Eden Gardens then they will have Cook to thank, who also became the youngest batsman to reach 7,000 Test runs on day two.
