Villas-Boas bemoans "unfair" draw

Andre Villas-Boas believes the decision by Uefa to allow teams such as his old club Chelsea to drop in the draw for the Europa League is "extremely unfair".

The north Londoners booked their place in the last 32 of the competition with a 3-1 win over Panathinaikos at White Hart Lane on Thursday, but will not be seeded in the second round because they finished second in Group J.

It means Spurs, priced up 15.00 to win the Europa League, could face Benfica, Olympiacos or CFR Cluj, who join the draw following elimination from the Champions League group stages.

Teams from the same country cannot be drawn together until the next round, preventing an unwanted reunion with Chelsea, but Villas-Boas is against the principal that teams should be allowed to drop into the Europa League from the Champions League.

"I think it's extremely unfair," the Tottenham boss said.

"It would be much fairer if the clubs came in to the Europa League when they are knocked out of the last 16 of the Champions League."

Villas-Boas, who won the Europa League with FC Porto in 2010, said: "You can't give a bonus to teams who have failed, and in the situation as it stands, teams fail in the Champions League and are promoted to the Europa League, which, in my opinion, is a massive bonus."

Villas-Boas was sacked by the west Londoners, available to back at 9.00 to win the Europa League, after just eight months in charge, despite guiding the club to the Champions League round of 16.
