Rodgers confident of Sterling deal

Brendan Rodgers believes Raheem Sterling will sign a new deal with Liverpool which will be in the best interest of the club and the player.

Talks are ongoing after the player, who has been one of Liverpool's standout players so far this season, turned 18. He is now entitled to negotiate a new deal despite having 18 months left on his contract.

Rodgers is determined to keep the player but insists the club will not be held to ransom.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "With young players, contracts get handed out left, right and centre to a kid who's not done anything, getting a four-year deal on decent money, and then clubs wonder why in two or three years it's gone wrong.

"It's gone wrong because you've taken away his hunger."

He added: "There's good conversations so there's no worry or concern. It will be resolved."

Meanwhile, Liverpool travel to West Ham on Sunday without Luis Suarez, who is suspended after picking up five bookings.

Skipper Steve Gerrard, who missed the Europa League win over Udinese on Thursday due to illness, is set to return, as are Daniel Agger and Lucas Leiva.

Liverpool are 11.00 to defeat the Hammers 2-0, with Sterling at 12.00 to score first. A 1-1 draw can be backed at 6.00.
