The Toffees[/url] have been looking for some cover in midfielder since Darren Gibson picked up a thigh problem during the 2-0 defeat to West Brom.

With the transfer window shut former Germany international Hitzlsperger began training with the club for a number of weeks in the hope of securing a deal.

Manager David Moyes has been weighing up the decision for a couple of weeks but he opted to sign the 30-year-old after it was confirmed Marouane Fellaini would be out for potentially two weeks.

Hitzlsperger has put pen-to-paper on a deal that will keep him at the club until January and, subject to international clearance, will be available to face QPR on Sunday.

Moyes was coy when asked whether he will hand the former West Ham and Aston Villa his debut at Loftus Road.

"What we're going to do is see how he is first. We're not saying what he's going to bring to us - he may even come here and not play," said the Scot

"We just want a longer period to have a look at him, make sure he's fit and see if he can offer us something."

The Toffees are 2.20 to beat QPR this weekend, with Rangers 2.20 to secure their first win of the season.

Ahead of the game, Moyes said he was keeping his fingers crossed Fellaini would be back in time to face Liverpool next week.

Moyes said: "Marouane has a bit of a knee injury, but we don't think it's too bad and hopefully he'll be okay. Not for this weekend, but then we'll see how he is."

Everton are currently fourth and are 6.50 to hang on to a Champions League qualification spot this season.
